The People of Detroit will be celebrated during a community reception hosted by Detroit Works Project Long Term Planning on Thursday, March 15 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the project’s HomeBase located in Eastern Market at 2929 Russell Street. The reception is free and open to the public. It will feature 12 images from the acclaimed photo-documentary titled “The People of Detroit.”
“The work we’ve been doing for the past few months to develop a new roadmap for our city’s future will benefit Detroit’s most important asset—its people,” said Laura Howard, Public Engagement/Ambassador Manager for Detroit Works Project Long Term Planning. “Since December we have been working hard to engage Detroiters from all walks of life in the process and displaying the different faces that represent our city reinforces the broad definition of community that exists in Detroit.”
Detroit native Noah Stephens first introduced the vivid photo-essay in 2010 as a way to reform negative popular notions of what it means to live in Detroit. It will be the first time people will be able to view the photos in an exhibition format. The iconic images will be on display at the HomeBase through April 12.
“I am pleased my work will on exhibit at the HomeBase of Detroit Works Project Long Term Planning,” said Stephens. ”Both The People of Detroit and Detroit Works are committed to the continued revitalization of the city. I’m honored to work with an organization as committed to propelling Detroit forward as I am.”
As part of the reception festivities, guests will be able to learn more about the Long Term Planning process by speaking with project representatives, and participate in a project called Detroit Stories by telling theirs. Light hors d’ oeuvres will be served.
